FAQ - Kurilpa Derby! You asked, here it is!

As we come close to the Kurilpa Derby 2023 with two weeks away. We thought we'd do a safety shout out and FAQ info dump!

Qu: What is the Kurilpa Derby?

A: Kurilpa Derby starts with a parade, with punters gathering at 1.30pm under the Dornoch Terrace Bridge. Once the streets are free of traffic, you'll be able to get on your wheely contraption, bike, scooter, or any wheely gadget you desire. We encourage you to walk, wheel and roll down Boundary Street into the Boundary St road closure area between Vulture St and Jane St for wacky and novelty races and relays between the start line at Vulture St down Boundary St near The Lizard which is marked by a giant metal truss right over Boundary Street marking the finish line. Anyone can join in!

Qu: Is the Event ‘All Ages’?

A: Absolutely! And in the spirit of fun and inclusivity, we encourage people to bring their family. Everyone is welcome!

Qu: Is the Event Free?

A: Yes, the event is 100% free and you can stay as little or as long as you like. It is hosted by West End Community Association who secure grant funding and sponsorships, without local business support this event would not be possible. Qu: How do I Bling my Bike and Stay Safe?

A: We recommend you wear a helmet, knee and wrist pads if applicable to your wheelie gadget. If you have a little one, feel free to add fairy wings, face paint, and other colourful add-ons. Check out this vid of the parade for inspiration!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwyNkrWXoFQ

Our races are themed so little kids aren't racing against big kids. These races are designed to be fun and the first across the line isn't necessarily the winner! After all, it's a good laugh and free entertainment!

We recommend once you finish racing to take your bike down to Jane St / Russell St on the footpath and leave it there so it's not a trip hazard! For safe racing, we recommend people not push each other because accidents happen, and we want to minimise them.

There will be two qualified paramedics providing First Aid and water and sunscreen at the Kiosk site (People's Park) during the event.

Qu: Is Covid still a thing?

A: Yes, and if you've got it stay home, if you're feeling a bit 'iffy', wear a mask. We don't want the event to be a super spreader event and health is our most important asset.

Qu: If I see an accident, what do I do?

A: Come to the kiosk space and let one of the volunteers know! We can then sort it out from there. Again we have trained paramedics and our Emcees will also assist in getting assistance. We also have roving marshals who are identifiable wearing hi-viz shirts.

Qu: Is this event accessible?

A: The event is wheelchair accessible, audio described and provides Auslan and between 2pm - 5.15pm -https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81593871321 (Audio description Zoom link). We encourage people to come with supports.

Qu: What happens if my child gets lost or I lose an item?

A: It's the responsibility of each parent to know where their child is, however we know that kids like to hang with other kids and if your child gets lost again come to the Kiosk space and/or talk to the Emcee to do a shout out or an event marshal. In previous years, kids have gone home, so ensure your child notifies you if they want to leave and come back (as an example).

If items get lost, we hope all of you pick them up and pass lost items to the Kiosk space and again, we can organise the MC to assist and we do shoutouts after the event to return items to their owners, so keep an eye on our socials.

Qu: How do I make a complaint?

A: Come to the kiosk space and someone will sit down with you one on one to discuss this with you. We welcome all feedback because what you tell us assists us each year to improve the event. For serious complaints, we can refer you to emergency and other services if required.

Qu: How do I donate on the day?

A: Come to the Kiosk, we have a bucket for cash and a square reader. We will be fundraising right until the event!

Qu: Can I volunteer on the day?

A: Yes come to the Kiosk, there are definite perks to volunteering (food, gratitude and kudos), but we do prefer that you complete the volunteer form -https://forms.gle/HY9y4e9EGsab4CCHA

Lastly, get into the action, whether that is the race (young and young at heart), or take part in the skateboard jam, dress up to win prizes, go check out a band on the main stage, Kiosk stage or Lekki Laneway or peruse the info stalls. There’s children’s art activities and plenty of businesses to get a bite to eat or a cool item! Participation and good energy bring the vibes! We are doing this to say thank you for keeping the spirit of West End alive.
